Technology Audits
Technology Strategy Audit
Technology decisions compound. The stack you chose two years ago, the shortcuts taken under deadline pressure, the team structure that made sense at ten people - they all shape what's possible now. This audit gives you an independent, experienced assessment of your entire technical picture: architecture health, technical debt severity, team capability gaps, and whether your technology roadmap actually supports your business goals. Built for founders and leadership teams who need clarity before making their next big bet.
Overview
What this audit covers
Every technology decision you've made - the frameworks chosen, the vendors contracted, the shortcuts accepted under deadline pressure - has compounded into your current technical reality. This audit gives you an independent, honest picture of where you stand: what's healthy, what's holding you back, and what's a credible risk to your next growth phase.
We work through your stack systematically: current architecture and its scalability characteristics, the severity and distribution of technical debt, team structure relative to what you're trying to build, and whether your planned technology investments actually make sense given where you are. We interview your engineering leads, review your roadmap against your business goals, and produce a health scorecard that makes trade-offs legible to non-technical leadership.
The output isn't a list of everything that needs fixing - that's rarely actionable. It's a prioritised view of what matters most given your current trajectory, with clear rationale for each recommendation. Whether you're preparing for a funding round, onboarding a new CTO, or trying to understand why delivery feels slower than it should, this audit gives you the clarity to make better decisions.
Why it matters
When you need this audit
Technical debt without a plan is a liability
Most scale-ups accumulate debt faster than they pay it down. The problem isn't the debt itself - it's not knowing which parts are manageable and which are genuinely blocking progress. A clear severity register changes that conversation.
Roadmaps that don't reflect technical reality
Product roadmaps built without honest technical input tend to underestimate complexity and overestimate what the current system can support. Misalignment between business ambition and technical capacity is a common reason scale-ups miss commitments.
New leadership inheriting unknown risk
A new CTO or VP Engineering joining a company with an existing codebase needs an independent assessment, not just the handover notes. This audit accelerates that due diligence and creates a shared baseline.
Investor scrutiny of your technology
Technical due diligence is standard in growth funding rounds. Having a current, credible technology health assessment prepared - rather than responding to ad-hoc investor questions - demonstrates maturity and saves time in the process.
Who it's for
Common scenarios
Illustrative scenarios - composites, not real clients - showing where this audit delivers the most value.
Co-Founder / CEO
Preparing for Series B and needs to be able to speak credibly about technical health
A SaaS founder approaching a Series B knows investors will scrutinise the technology. Their CTO is competent but has been heads-down building for two years, with no time to document the full picture. The Technology Strategy Audit produces a health scorecard and debt register the founder can use directly in investor conversations - and surfaces two architectural decisions worth addressing before due diligence, while there's still time to act.
CTO
Growing tech debt with no consensus on what to tackle first
A CTO at a 70-person fintech has an engineering team full of strong opinions about what needs refactoring, but no shared framework for prioritisation. Each squad has its own list. The audit provides an independent read on debt severity across the stack, letting the CTO align the team around a single prioritised backlog rather than competing agendas. It also gives them the language to explain trade-offs to the CEO without getting into the weeds.
Incoming CTO
Joining a company and inheriting a codebase they didn't build
An experienced CTO is joining a 90-person e-commerce business six months after a burst of rapid hiring and product expansion. Before formally starting, they commission a Technology Strategy Audit to establish an independent baseline of the technology and team. The findings shape their 90-day plan, give them a credible basis for board conversations about investment priorities, and help them earn the engineering team's trust quickly through thorough, unbiased analysis.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions
A code review looks at the quality of individual code files or pull requests. This audit looks at the whole technology picture: stack decisions, team structure, roadmap alignment, and strategic risk. We don't read every line of code - we assess whether the overall technical system supports your business goals.
The scorecard rates your technology across five dimensions: stack currency and maintainability, technical debt severity, architecture scalability, team capability relative to roadmap demands, and tooling and process maturity. Each dimension gets a rating with supporting evidence and recommended actions.
At minimum, we need access to your CTO or most senior technical lead, and ideally 2-3 engineering leads who own different parts of the system. For the business context, a session with the CEO or CPO helps us understand where the company is heading. We keep stakeholder time requirements clearly scoped.
That's a legitimate outcome and we welcome it. Our findings reflect an external perspective with specific evidence, but your team will always have context we don't. We present findings in the walkthrough call and treat disagreements as useful signal - sometimes they reveal something we missed, sometimes they reveal a blind spot worth discussing.
We'll ask for representative samples - architecture diagrams, key system documentation, and in some cases specific areas of code the team wants us to review. We don't need full repository access for the standard audit, though it's available in the Enterprise tier if needed.
Very. An independent technology assessment before a senior hire gives both you and the incoming leader a shared, credible baseline. It accelerates onboarding and reduces the risk that critical issues go undiscovered during handover.
It's a structured assessment of your technology stack, team, and roadmap conducted by an independent expert. The goal is to give leadership an honest, evidence-based view of technical health - what's working, what's at risk, and what to prioritise.
